D. Volcanic island arcs are associated with subduction zones not mid-oceanic ridges. Examples are the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean, the Philippines, and many more island arcs in the eastern pacific ocean.





Why are they arcs? Because of the curvature of the earth with respect to a horizontal plate.





Stretch a piece of paper (copier paper will do) across a large sphere like a big ball or a globe. Then look straight down at it. See the arc that is made where the edge of the paper touches the surface of the sphere.
